Celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha, Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular festival in India. People install idols of Ganesha in their homes and public pandals (tents) and offer various sweets to the idol. Devotees also perform aarti (a fire ritual) in the evenings. The immersion of idols in water also takes place, which is called 'visarjan'.
